When you sit down to take your first pregnancy test, I guarantee it will feel like the longest test you’ve ever had to take. While you’re waiting for those two pink lines to appear (or not appear) time can seem to stop. Pregnancy tests measure a specific pregnancy hormone that mothers develop after conception. This hormone is called human chorionic gonadotropin or hCG.
False negatives are when your test says you are not pregnant but you actually are pregnant (yikes!). These often occur because either (1) the test instructions were not followed properly or (2) you’re testing too early and there isn’t enough hCG hormone in your body for the test to recognize your pregnancy. This is why I tell women that it’s fine to use a sensitive pregnancy test before you miss your period but your chance of a false negative will be much higher. It’s better to take your pregnancy test after you’ve missed two days of your period because this allows more hCG hormone to build up in your urine.
False positives on pregnancy tests are more uncommon. This happens when the test stick says you’re pregnant but you actually aren’t pregnant. Most of the pregnancy tests I’ve listed below are all at least 97% accurate 5 days before your missed period. All of them are 99% accurate when used the day after your missed period. The most common cause of a false pregnancy is when a woman tests very early before her period and her test registers that she is pregnant. In a few days her period comes along and it’s very heavy. This woman has had an early miscarriage. The test registered she was pregnant but the pregnancy was not as healthy as it should have been and her body rejected it. This is another reason to wait until you’ve missed a few days of your period before using a pregnancy test. False positives can also be caused by certain tumors which release hCG. This is extremely uncommon though.
No matter what result you’re expecting to see on your test stick, you want it to be an accurate one. Below I have listed the top over-the-counter pregnancy tests available in 2016. Pregnancy is a life-changing experience for any woman and every test offers something different. Use one of these brands to ensure your result is as clear as possible.
1.) Best Overall Pregnancy Test
The best overall pregnancy test on the market is “First Response Gold Digital Pregnancy Test”. First Response is already a brand that is highly rated in terms of accuracy and sensitivity. Their digital test offers a very easy-to-read display. Using a quality digital test will remove the guesswork since First Response Digital Pregnancy Test will tell you either “yes” or “no”.
The First Response Digital Pregnancy Test is the most sensitive test on the market. Lab test show it can detect hCG levels as low as 6.5 mIU/ml. Since most women begin pregnancy with very low levels of hCG, it’s important to get the most sensitive test available. While you do want to be careful about testing for pregnancy too early, this test can tell you whether you’re pregnant up to six days before your missed period with 97% accuracy. You will get the most accurate results, 99.9%, if you test after the first day of your missed period. This test will also give you results in a very timely manner, under three minutes.
First Response also makes a non-digital version of their pregnancy test, First Response Early Result. This is the test that I used to tell whether I was pregnant or not. I found it to be an extremely reliable test. It has the same sensitivity as the digital test and is able to detect hCG levels as low as 6.5 mIU/ml. Like the digital test, First Response Early Result is most accurate when used the day after your missed period. It is slightly less expensive than the digital test but after using it for my pregnancy I would recommend the First Response Digital Pregnancy Test instead. When I took my first pregnancy test I took it early, two days before my period. On my first positive the test strip lines were very faint and it was difficult to tell whether or not I was pregnant. Had I purchased the digital test my result would have been much easier to read.
For value, quality, sensitivity and an easy-to-read digital display I would recommend First Response Gold Digital Pregnancy Test as the best overall test available on the market this year.
2.) Clearblue Pregnancy Test
The Clearblue Digital Pregnancy Test is a solid runner-up to the First Response Digital Pregnancy Test. Clearblue is a reliable brand that is both affordable and easy to read. Like First Response, Clearblue offers both digital and standard versions of their pregnancy tests. Clearblue is the second most sensitive pregnancy test on the market. These tests can detect hCG levels as low as 15 mIU/ml and can give a pregnancy result up to 5 days before your missed period with 97% accuracy. The day after your missed period the test is 99% accurate.
Many women like Clearblue because it’s a dependable and sensitive pregnancy test that’s easy to read. The digital version will clearly tell you whether or not you are pregnant. However, it’s very important to follow the instructions that come with the test. Failure to follow all of the instructions will most likely result in a false negative.
Since the Clearblue test is less sensitive than the First Response brand I placed it as the second-best pregnancy test available in 2016. Based on it’s sensitivity, accuracy and dependability as a pregnancy test I would still highly recommend it to any mom-to-be.

3.) EPT Error Proof Pregnancy Test
The EPT Pregnancy Test is the third most accurate test on the market today. It’s an affordable and trustworthy brand that is readily available nationwide. The EPT Pregnancy Test has the same sensitivity as the Clearblue Pregnancy test. It can detect hCG levels as low as 15 mIU/ml. I gave this test third place because even though it can detect a positive pregnancy as early as 5 days before your missed period it only offers 50% accuracy with that early result. Once you miss the first day of your period this test is 99% accurate and works as well as any other test on the market.
EPT offers both digital and standard versions of their pregnancy tests. I would recommend their digital version because of it’s easy-to-read display. Both of the EPT tests show their results in under 4 minutes.
For an early pregnancy test I would not recommend the EPT brand because of it’s accuracy issues. However, if you have missed the first day of your period I believe the EPT Digital Pregnancy Test will give you fast, accurate and easy-to-read results.
