Homemade Hand Sanitizer, Disinfectant & Wet Wipe Solution

With all the stores in my town and surrounding area selling out of alcohol-based hand sanitizer, disinfectant and wet wipes I chose to make my own at home.

The World Health Organization says that the most important thing you can do to prevent the spread of the coronavirus is wash you hands with soap and water for 20 seconds. When soap and water are not available, alcohol-based hand sanitizer and disinfectant are the next best thing. You can make them both in the comfort of your own home.

Gel Hand Sanitizer Recipe #1

  • Aloe Vera Gel
  • 70 – 99 % Isopropyl Alcohol
  • Tea Tree Oil

This recipe is basic but still very effective. Combine one part aloe vera gel with three parts isopropyl alcohol (70% and higher). Add 3 drops of tea tree oil. Mix well and store in a dry place.

Spray Hand Sanitizer, Disinfectant & Wet Wipe Solution

  • 70 – 99 % Isopropyl Alcohol
  • Glycerin or Personal Lubricant
  • Hydrogen Peroxide
  • Distilled Water
  • Spray Bottle, Container or Dried Wipes

This recipe can be used as a sanitizer, disinfectant spray or wet wipe soaking solution. It’s potent and easy to use.

Mix 1 and 2/3 cups isopropyl alcohol with 2 tablespoons of glycerin. I’ve seen recipes that call for only 2 teaspoons of glycerin, but in my experience the mixture is not emollient enough. If you don’t have glycerin you can substitute personal lubricant.

If you don’t have any glycerin or lubricant you can make this spray without it but you MUST use a moisturizer afterwards, as it can be very drying for your skin.

In a separate container, combine 1 tablespoon hydrogen peroxide with 1/4 cup distilled water. If you don’t have distilled water, you can substitute tap water that has been boiled and cooled.

Combine the liquids. Your solution is ready. You can fill a spray bottle with it for spray sanitizer and disinfectant. To make alcohol-based wet wipes soak dried wipes in the solution and cover the container, using as necessary.
