Soft, Silky Homemade Playdough

This recipe is easy and fast. It makes silky smooth playdough with a pleasant scent.

The softest playdough ever!

  • 4 cups flour
  • 1 1/2 cups salt
  • 8 tsp cream of tartar
  • 4 cups water
  • 4 T virgin coconut oil
  • (optional) 1 tsp flavored extract for scent. I use vanilla or lemon, but you can use coconut, orange, peppermint, almond, rose, lavender….whatever strikes your fancy.
  • Wax paper
  • sandwich bags
  • Vegan food coloring

1.) Put a large pot on the stove.

2.) Add the flour, salt and cream of tartar. Stir well.

3.) Add water, coconut oil and extract (if using).

4.) Stir to combine. Turn heat to medium and stir continuously until mixture thickens and forms a ball.

5.) Turn out onto wax paper and knead with hands for 5-10 minutes, gently.

6.) Divide into balls and add a few drops of color to each dough ball. Knead color into dough ball.

7.) Place finished dough balls into plastic bags. Push air out of bags. Enjoy for up to a year!

That’s it! Homemade playdough that is soft and natural for our kids’ little hands.

You can use playdough to build fine motor skills, color recognition and to illustrate the senses of touch, sight and smell. If your child is old enough you can build their math skills by having them measure out the ingredients. Get creative with it!
